Rather than simply mapping the project, this book invites key guests, including geographer Gerry Kearns, educator Kathleen Lynch, secondary school principal Liam Wegimont and architectural historian Ellen Rowley, to expand upon the issues that most concern them: how class and education has shaped, and continues to limit, exclude and prohibit, young people and adults’ fulfilment and futures. Delving into FREE THOUGHT FM, Rachel O’Dwyer considers Phelan’s longstanding use of radio alongside its history as “an idealised public space”, as well as reflecting on transmission and sound waves themselves. Finally, looking back on the project, artist Sarah Pierce reflects on access and equality of knowledge, recognising that we are all agents of change.
The ‘FREE THOUGHT FM – Archive’ is now available to listen to at https://freethoughtfm.bandcamp.com/ We would like to thank everyone who joined us on our mission to better understand the class divide in Dublin City and unequal access to Third Level Education.
We would like to thank all our many contributors for highlighting this inequality, and our listeners and media whose support has been genuinely overwhelming.
The FREE THOUGHT FM – Archive, as a work of art, is a significant collection of conversations and a valuable resource; for students, academics, parents, teenagers, politicians, civil servants, social workers and educators, and many more.
